In the second episode of Murdered by Morning season 1, entitled "Dead of Winter," viewers are taken to a small town in Wisconsin where winter has settled in and the snow is deep. When a local family is found dead in their home, the small community is rocked to its core.
The episode begins with a reenactment of the 911 call made by a neighbor who discovered the bodies. The police arrive and the investigation begins. Detectives discover that the family consisted of a mother, father, and their two young children. All four were found dead, and the family dog was also killed. The police believe that the family was targeted, but they have no idea why or by whom.
As the investigation progresses, detectives interview family members, friends, and neighbors. They discover that the family had no known enemies and were well-liked in the community. However, they also uncover some unsettling information about the father, who was heavily involved in the local drug trade. They begin to suspect that the murders may have been drug-related.
Meanwhile, forensic investigators are examining the crime scene and the bodies in an attempt to gather evidence. They find evidence of a struggle and are able to determine that the family was killed with a firearm. However, they find no fingerprints or DNA that could identify a suspect.
As the investigation continues, detectives receive a tip from an unlikely source. A local pastor contacts them and says that he has information about the murders. The detectives meet with the pastor and he tells them that he overheard a conversation between two men in his congregation. The men were discussing the murders and one of them revealed that he was involved. The pastor provides detectives with the names of the two men.
The detectives are able to locate the men and bring them in for questioning. They quickly discover that one of the men was involved in the drug trade with the father of the family. The man confesses to killing the family and the dog, claiming that he was hired by the father's rival in the drug trade. He provides detectives with the name of the rival.
With this new information, the detectives are able to track down the rival and bring him in for questioning. He denies any involvement in the murders but detectives are able to gather enough evidence to charge him with conspiracy to commit murder.
The episode ends with the two men being arrested and charged with the murders. The small community is able to begin to heal, but the tragedy of the family's senseless deaths lingers on.
Overall, "Dead of Winter" is a gripping episode of Murdered by Morning that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The investigation is thorough and methodical, with twists and turns that keep the audience guessing until the very end.
