Detective William Murdoch is back in action with his latest investigation in season 3 episode 13 of Murdoch Mysteries titled "The Tesla Effect". Set in 1893 Toronto, the episode follows Detective Murdoch as he delves into a death of a young woman whose body was found in a room with no possible means of entry or exit, leaving him to question if there's a scientific explanation for this bizarre case.
The investigation leads him to the world-renowned Serbian-American physicist and inventor, Nikola Tesla, who has been invited to Toronto to display his latest invention, the Tesla Coil, at a science exhibition. As Detective Murdoch attends the exhibition, he meets Tesla and his assistant, who both offer unusual perspectives on the nature of the universe and the possibility of energy as a life force.
As Murdoch continues to investigate the case, he discovers that Tesla's latest invention has a profound impact on his investigation and leads him to question the limitations of science and technology as well as the human ability to harness and manipulate it.
Meanwhile, Constable Crabtree struggles with his own scientific pursuits as he tries to invent a new device, inspired by Tesla's research, with the hope of winning a prize in a science competition. This subplot allows for a more light-hearted storyline to counterbalance the intensity of the main investigation.
Through twists and turns, "The Tesla Effect" keeps viewers on their toes as Murdoch navigates through new theories and experiments in his attempt to solve the mystery. The episode offers unique insights into the scientific advancements and possibilities of the late 19th century while also exploring the inherent human fascination with and fear of science.
As with every episode of Murdoch Mysteries, the show offers an engaging storyline, stunning period detail, and excellent performances from its cast. "The Tesla Effect" is a standout episode that showcases the show's ability to blend history, science, mystery, and drama into a compelling narrative.
