The very first episode of the series started when the inspector decided to retire from service following the death of his wife Isabella who was murdered by a driver who ran over her and ran off. Just after that he found out about the death of a certain Johnny in the same manner as his wife and also that the guy who was suspected of causing his wife's death was in the locality where Johnny had died he changed his mind about retiring.
He then relocated alongside his close colleague John Bacchus to that area to investigate Johnny's death. However when he got there he found out the same guy Webster who he suspected for killing Isabella was also carrying out investigations about the same case.
The next series of episodes that followed in the series were all about the inspector setting out investigations about various crimes committed in relation to killings, theft, abductions, child trafficking and suicide cases as well.
The idea behind the series was developed by Peter Flannery and Mick Ford based on inspirations they got from one of Alan Hunter's novels on Inspector Gently.
The fifteen episode series was produced by Company Pictures and aired on the British Broadcasting Corporation.
The entire series with all episodes is available on DVD and is distributed in many countries of the world.

When Gently is asked to look into a young woman's unsolved murder, he hopes to expose one last cover-up before retiring from the force. Still at odds with his superior, Bacchus asks for Rachel's help investigating the murder of a worker killed during a picket riot. Both cases seem to be linked to a charismatic and ambitious politician.

When DCI Gently and his team investigate a body found in a chemical storage tank, they learn that the victim's wife was convicted of his murder eight years ago. But Gently decides to reopen the case against the wishes of DI Bacchus, who had worked on the original investigation.

A bank armed robbery interrupts Christmas Eve celebrations at the station and sets Gently, Bacchus, and Coles on the trail of a gang of local skinheads.

When the body of a cash-strapped property developer is found beneath Newcastle's Tyne Bridge, Gently again suspects a murder dressed up as a suicide. The death followed a fight with two childhood friends, one a union organizer, the other a restaurateur.

To Coles' disgust, Bacchus and his male colleagues are dismissive of a prostitute's claims she was raped and urge her to drop the charges.
