The show "My First Place" follows the journeys of first-time homebuyers as they navigate the complicated and often overwhelming process of purchasing their first home. In season 3, episode 11, titled "Artists' Attic," viewers are introduced to a couple, Dana and James, who are looking for a home that can double as a workspace for their artistic endeavors.
Dana and James are both professional artists, with Dana working primarily as a painter and James focusing on sculpture. They have been living in a small apartment for the past few years but have been feeling cramped and limited by their lack of space. They hope to find a home that will give them enough room to work on their art, as well as have a comfortable living space.
The couple begins their search by meeting with a real estate agent who specializes in finding homes for artists. The agent takes them to a few properties, including a barn that has been converted into a studio space and a large loft with a lot of natural light. While both properties are appealing, the couple is concerned about the amount of work that would be required to make either space livable as well as workable.
Eventually, Dana and James find a property that seems perfect - a three-bedroom house that has a partially finished attic that they can convert into their studio space. They love the character of the house, with its original woodwork and vintage charm, and are excited about the potential of the attic space. They make an offer on the house, which is accepted, and begin the process of closing on their new home.
The rest of the episode follows Dana and James as they renovate the attic space, turning it into a bright, airy studio with plenty of room for both of them to work. They paint the walls white to reflect the natural light that pours in from the skylights, and install shelves and storage units to keep their supplies organized. Throughout the renovation process, they struggle with unexpected challenges, such as a leaky roof and an unpredictable heating system, but they persevere and ultimately create a beautiful workspace that reflects both of their unique styles.
As they settle into their new home, Dana and James reflect on the challenges they faced during the homebuying process and the renovation of their attic space. They are grateful to have found a home that accommodates their artistic careers and look forward to continuing to grow and create in their new space.
