7 teams arrive in Alice springs to compete in the first of 3 NT challenges. The teams arrived in the red centre, the middle of a cattle station. Their challenge was to cook "back-to-basics" style – over fires, with no any electrical appliances or running water. Their first test was to cook a pioneers classic – a damper. Teams had 1 hour to cook their damper and accompaniment. The winning team (determined by judges only) is safe for the week. The remaining teams cooked that night for local farmer
