After a gripping first episode, National Treasure season 1 episode 2 starts with Paul Finchley (Robbie Coltrane) going to his solicitor's office, where the two discuss the situation Paul is currently facing. A journalist has written a story implicating Paul in a historic rape case, and the situation is made worse when another woman comes forward with her own story about Paul's behavior.

Despite his protestations of innocence, Paul is informed by his solicitor that this case could potentially destroy his career, and that the best course of action would be for him to plead guilty to a lesser charge in order to avoid going to trial.

Meanwhile, Paul's wife Marie (Julie Walters) is struggling to cope with the stress of the situation and feels increasingly isolated from her husband. She begins to confide in her daughter Dee (Andrea Riseborough) about her marital problems, and Dee suggests that Marie should take a break from her husband and spend some time with her.

As Marie goes to visit Dee, Paul is left alone to deal with the fallout from the allegations. He receives a visit from a woman who claims to have been his fan for years, but Paul quickly realizes that her motives are less than pure.

As the situation spirals out of control, Paul's past comes back to haunt him in unexpected ways, and he is forced to confront the darkest aspects of his personality. The episode ends with a shocking revelation that leaves the audience eager to see what will happen next.
