Ep 1. One Mississippi

In the pilot episode of One Mississippi, we are introduced to the show's main character and comedian, Tig Notaro. Tig is a woman who has recently returned to her hometown in Mississippi after a successful career in Los Angeles. However, the trip was not for a happy reason - Tig's mother had just passed away from cancer and she was there to attend her funeral and spend some time with her family.

As Tig arrives at the airport, we quickly see that she is going to be in for a bumpy ride. Her flight is delayed, and the airline sends her luggage to the wrong destination. Despite these minor inconveniences, Tig remains calm and collected - a trait that will be tested later on in the episode.

When she finally arrives at her family home, Tig is greeted by her stepfather, Bill, and her brother, Remy. She quickly realizes that things have changed since she left and that her family is a mess. Her stepfather is a recovering alcoholic and her brother is a drug addict who is trying to get his life back on track. Tig's attempts to connect with her family are met with resistance and it quickly becomes apparent that they haven't dealt with the loss of their mother in healthy ways. Tig must find a way to navigate the complicated relationships within her family and deal with her own grief at the same time.

Throughout the episode, we see flashbacks of Tig's past - particularly her relationship with her mother. These scenes are poignant and show a much softer side of the character. We also hear audio from one of Tig's stand-up performances which deals with her cancer diagnosis and double mastectomy. It's clear that Tig is using her comedy as a tool to deal with her own grief and trauma.

Despite the heavy subject matter of the show, there are moments of humor sprinkled throughout the episode. Tig's dry wit and deadpan delivery will have viewers chuckling, even when the situation seems dire.

One Mississippi is a show that deals with heavy themes like death, grief, addiction, and sexuality. However, it approaches these topics with empathy and humanity. In the first episode alone, we see characters dealing with their own personal demons and struggling to connect with one another in the midst of tragedy. This is a thoughtful and emotional show, but it's also one that is filled with heart and humor.
