Ep 3. SODACHI Riddle, Part 2

SODACHI Riddle, Part 2 is the third episode of season 1 of the anime series OWARIMONOGATARI. The episode continues from the previous episode where Araragi Koyomi, a high school senior, meets Sodachi Oikura, a girl from his past who disappeared seven years ago. In this episode, their conversation continues, and Sodachi reveals more about her past and why she has returned after all these years.

As the episode begins, Araragi and Sodachi are still sitting in the classroom, and Sodachi continues to explain the reason behind her seven-year absence. She reveals that her family was in debt and that her parents ran away, leaving her alone to deal with the debt collectors. Sodachi was unable to pay the debt, and her grandfather had to intervene to get her out of the situation. However, the entire ordeal left a deep emotional and psychological scar on her, which eventually led to her leaving town.

Sodachi then starts to talk about her math teacher, whom she accuses of being the cause of all her troubles. She claims that her math teacher was incompetent and that he had wronged her in some way, but does not reveal how. Araragi tries to coax the information out of her, but Sodachi becomes agitated and eventually leaves the classroom, leaving Araragi to ponder over her words.

The episode then shifts to Araragi's perspective, where he starts to piece together the information Sodachi has given him. He determines that Sodachi's math teacher was her only hope in getting rid of the debt collectors and saving her family, but he failed to do so. This failure of her teacher led to Sodachi's trauma and eventual departure.

Araragi decides to confront Sodachi again and ask her about her math teacher. This time, Sodachi is willing to talk, and she reveals the name of her math teacher, Oikura Meme, who is coincidentally Araragi's uncle. Sodachi blames Oikura Meme for her plight, claiming that he was a terrible and incompetent teacher. However, Araragi defends his uncle, claiming that Oikura Meme was a renowned mathematician and that Sodachi must have misunderstood something.

Araragi then goes to visit his uncle to ask him about Sodachi and the situation. Oikura Meme is initially hesitant to talk, but eventually reveals that he had indeed botched Sodachi's math exam, which resulted in her being unable to clear the debt collectors. However, he denies that he was a bad teacher, claiming that he had his reasons for failing her. He then reveals that Sodachi was his daughter from a previous marriage, and that he had been trying to amend his past mistakes by tutoring her.

The episode ends with Araragi pondering over this revelation and wondering why Sodachi had not mentioned her relation to his uncle earlier. He wonders if there are still more secrets to uncover about Sodachi and her past.
