As the fifth episode of the first season of Pandora begins, Jax and the rest of Earth’s young cadets are gearing up for their final exams. Each student is given a task to complete, and whoever completes the task fastest will become the squad’s leader for their graduation. While some students take the task more seriously than others, one cadet appears to be holding back.

Eli Voss, one of the best pilots in Jax’s squad, is hiding a secret. Though he’s the front-runner for squad leader, Eli’s not sure if he wants the responsibility. Even worse, he’s not sure if he wants to be a pilot anymore.

With so many thoughts weighing him down, Eli loses control of his ship during the exam and crashes. Thankfully, he’s rescued by Jax and the other cadets. However, his crash reveals something else - the throttle on his ship was tampered with, making the cause of his accident no longer his fault.

As Jax investigates the issue, she discovers that Eli’s throttle was tampered with by a group of civilians who seem to have a grudge against Earth’s cadets. A group of anti-cadet activists have been protesting against the presence of Earth’s Space Training Academy on their planet and have been resorting to violence to get their message across.

Jax and her squad are tasked with finding the group and bringing them to justice. As they work, Jax realizes that their message might not be entirely unfounded. The academy’s presence on the planet has disrupted the lives of its residents, who feel like they’re being invaded by outsiders. Jax’s thoughts are further complicated by her feelings for Ralen, an alien cadet who’s become her closest friend.
