Ep 9. And Hell Itself My Only Foe

At the beginning of Penny Dreadful season 2 episode 9, titled "And Hell Itself My Only Foe," Vanessa is still reeling from the events of the last episode, where she opened the box and was confronted with all her darkest fears. She is struggling to come to terms with what she has seen and is increasingly withdrawn and paranoid.

Meanwhile, Dorian Gray has returned to his home and finds a surprise visitor waiting for him: Angelique, his lover from the previous season. Angelique is seeking refuge from the police and begs Dorian for help. Dorian lets her stay in his home, but their relationship becomes strained as she becomes increasingly fearful of being discovered.

Elsewhere in the city, Dr. Frankenstein is still trying to save Brona, who is slowly dying from tuberculosis. He is also still under the influence of Lily, whom he believes he has saved from the dead. However, Lily is not all that she seems, and her true nature is slowly becoming more apparent.

Back at Vanessa's home, Ethan, Sir Malcolm and Victor arrive to talk to Vanessa about what they should do next in their quest to defeat the witches. They find her increasingly erratic, and she tells them that they are all in grave danger. She tells them that the danger they are facing is not just physical but spiritual, and that they are all entrapped in a net of evil.

As the episode progresses, the different storylines begin to intersect and intertwine. Vanessa becomes increasingly convinced that she is being hunted by the witches, and her paranoia and fear begin to intensify. Meanwhile, Dorian and Angelique's relationship becomes more complicated as they are forced to confront their own hidden desires and fears.

As the climax of the episode approaches, all the characters are forced to confront their greatest fears and darkest selves. Vanessa's battle against the witches reaches a fever pitch, and Ethan must decide where his loyalties lie. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating the season finale.
