In Persona5 the Animation season 1 episode 1, we are introduced to the protagonist, Ren Amamiya, as he begins his new life in Tokyo after being falsely accused of assault in his hometown. Ren is sent to live with family friends, the Sakura family, and begins attending Syujin High School in Tokyo. However, it quickly becomes clear that things may not be as they seem in this new city.
Ren quickly becomes friends with Ryuji Sakamoto, a rebellious and outspoken classmate who despises their school's strict rules and the bullies who enforce them. The two boys share a common bond as outcasts, and soon discover a mysterious app on Ren's phone that allows them to enter a strange alternate world called the Metaverse.
In this other world, they encounter a shadowy version of their school's gym teacher, Kamoshida, who seems to be abusing his power over the students. Ren and Ryuji soon realize that they can summon powerful avatars called Personas to help them fight against Kamoshida's powerful Shadow self in the Metaverse. After their first battle, they return to the real world and realize that their actions in the Metaverse have had a ripple effect, improving the lives of those they fought for in the real world.
As Ren begins to settle into his new life, he also meets a number of other students at Syujin High who are all struggling in their own ways. There's Ann Takamaki, a shy and introverted girl who is being harassed by Kamoshida and his minions; Makoto Nijima, an uptight honor student who takes her role as student council president very seriously; and Yusuke Kitagawa, a gifted artist who is struggling to gain recognition for his work.
Throughout the episode, we see hints of a deeper conspiracy at work in the city, as a mysterious figure known as Igor watches over Ren and his companions from his Velvet Room. He speaks of a power called the Persona, which Ren and the others seem to possess, and hints at a larger purpose for their newfound abilities.
Overall, Persona5 the Animation season 1 episode 1 does an excellent job of setting the stage for the series' compelling blend of high school drama and supernatural adventure. With richly-drawn characters and a deep mythology, it's easy to see why Persona5 has become such a beloved franchise among gamers and anime fans alike.
