- March 7, 2005
Pet Star was a reality show that aired on Animal Planet from 2002 to 2005. Hosted by Mario Lopez, the show featured various pets and their talented owners as they competed for a grand prize of $25,000 and the title of Pet Star. In Pet Star season 3 episode 15, titled "Pet Star: 44," viewers got to see some of the most talented pets and their owners compete in a series of challenges.
The episode started off with a hilarious clip featuring pets that just couldn't seem to get along. From a dog who was afraid of a cat to a bird who was chasing a monkey, the clip had viewers laughing and cringing at the same time. After the clip ended, Mario Lopez introduced the judges for the episode - actress and animal rights activist Stella Adler and animal trainer Joel Slaven.
The first act was a group of six talented dogs who performed an astonishing stunt routine. The dogs jumped through hoops, over hurdles, and even through a ring of fire. Their trainer, Tommie Turvey, was a skilled equestrian who worked with his dogs in his spare time. The judges were impressed by the dogs' agility and coordination, but they also noted that the routine was a bit too messy. Nonetheless, the dogs' energy and enthusiasm got them through to the next round.
The second act was a miniature horse named Casanova and his owner, Kelly. The duo had been performing together for years and had even appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." Kelly introduced Casanova as the "world's smallest performing horse," and he certainly lived up to the title. Casanova performed a variety of tricks, including walking on his hind legs and jumping through hoops. The judges were impressed by the horse's calm demeanor and Kelly's gentle handling of him, but they also noted that the routine was a bit too short. Regardless, Casanova and Kelly moved on to the next round.
The third act was a trio of dogs who did an amazing synchronized swimming routine. The dogs, all golden retrievers, swam around in a small pool to the tune of "Let's Get Physical" by Olivia Newton-John. Their trainer, Lisa, had taught them to swim and perform tricks together, and the result was a beautiful display of skill and teamwork. The judges were thrilled with the performance and praised Lisa for her training methods. The dogs easily moved on to the next round.
The fourth act was a parrot named Simon and his owner, Randy. Simon had been rescued from the wild and had an incredible ability to mimic sounds and voices. Randy introduced Simon as a "one-bird band," and the parrot certainly lived up to the title. Simon sang, laughed, and even imitated the sound of a lawnmower. The judges were amazed by Simon's talent and even had a laugh at his jokes. Simon and Randy easily moved on to the next round.
The fifth act was a cat named Sammy and his owner, Kristen. Sammy was a trained cat who could perform a variety of tricks, such as jumping through a hoop, walking on his hind legs, and even playing dead. Sammy's talent was undeniable, but the judges noted that the routine was a bit slow-paced. Nevertheless, Sammy and Kristen moved on to the next round.
The final act of the night was a pair of dogs named Sunny and Cher. Sunny and Cher were both rescued from shelters and had been trained by their owner, Lance, to perform together. The dogs did a variety of tricks, including jumping through hoops and walking on their hind legs. The judges were impressed by Sunny and Cher's energy and coordination, but they also noted that the routine could use a bit more polish. Nonetheless, Sunny and Cher moved on to the next round.
At the end of the episode, Mario Lopez announced that viewers could go online to vote for their favorite act. The winning act would receive a $1,000 prize and a chance to appear on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." The episode ended with a montage of all the pets and their owners, proving that even the smallest or unlikeliest of animals can have incredible talents.
