Please Like Me is an Australian television comedy-drama series created and produced by Josh Thomas. The show follows the life of Josh, a young gay man struggling to come to terms with his sexuality and navigate his way through the challenges of adult life.

In season 1 episode 3, titled "Portuguese Custard Tarts," Josh is still coming to terms with being gay and has started to explore dating. He meets a guy named Geoffrey at the farmer's market and they agree to go on a date later that day. However, Josh's plans are thwarted when his mother, Rose, cancels their weekly dinner together due to a family emergency.

Meanwhile, Josh's best friend, Tom, is feeling overwhelmed as his boyfriend, Patrick, spends more and more time at his apartment. Tom is desperate for some alone time but doesn't want to hurt Patrick's feelings. He confides in Josh, who suggests they take a break from one another.

As the day progresses, Josh finds himself at a loss for things to do. He decides to bake Portuguese custard tarts, a favorite of his mother's. However, things go awry when he realizes he doesn't have all the necessary ingredients. In a panic, he goes to the market with his pet dog, John, in tow, and runs into Geoffrey.

The two have a brief but awkward conversation before being interrupted by Rose, who has come to the market to stock up on gourmet cheeses. Rose is surprised to see Geoffrey with Josh and assumes that he is his boyfriend. Josh, not wanting to deal with the awkwardness, goes along with it and invites Geoffrey back to his apartment for dinner.

Rose is thrilled at the idea, but things quickly become chaotic as Josh struggles to finish cooking the tarts and Tom and Patrick unexpectedly show up. Tensions rise as everyone tries to navigate the awkward situation, but in the end, they all sit down to enjoy the Portuguese custard tarts.
