POV Season 16 Episode 9 Family Fundamentals

  • August 26, 2003

In the ninth episode of season 16 of POV, titled "Family Fundamentals," viewers are taken on a journey into the lives of several families who are grappling with one of the most controversial issues of our time: homosexuality. Through interviews and footage of their experiences, viewers are given a glimpse into the struggles and triumphs that come with being gay in a society that is not always accepting.

The episode begins by introducing viewers to one family in particular: the Robeson family of Oxnard, California. Here, we meet Brian and Louise Robeson, whose son Ben has recently come out as gay. While they are struggling to come to terms with this news, they are also trying to be supportive and loving parents to their son, who is still battling his own demons.

From here, POV takes us on a tour of several other families who are experiencing similar challenges. In Oklahoma City, we meet the McAlpines, who have a daughter named Lisa that is gay. Despite the fact that they are conservative Christians, they are determined to love and support their daughter no matter what. In San Francisco, we meet the Sanchez family, who have three children – including a son who is gay. They too are struggling to find a balance between their religious beliefs and their love for their son.

Throughout the episode, viewers are given a sense of the profound emotional impact that this issue can have on families. We see parents who are heartbroken that their child is not living the life they imagined for them, and children who are struggling with their own sense of identity and self-worth. But we also see moments of incredible strength and resilience, as families work to come together and find common ground.

One of the most powerful aspects of "Family Fundamentals" is the way it explores the various reasons why people might feel a sense of conflict around the issue of homosexuality. For some, it is rooted in religion and a belief that homosexuality is a sin. For others, it is a matter of cultural or societal norms. And for others still, it is simply a matter of personal bias or ignorance.

By examining these varying perspectives, POV does an excellent job of showing the complexity of the issue and why it is so difficult for people to find common ground. But it also demonstrates the importance of finding that common ground, of reaching across the aisle to understand and empathize with those who hold different beliefs. For families like the Robesons and the McAlpines and the Sanchezes, the journey toward greater understanding and acceptance can be a difficult one – but it is ultimately one of the most important journeys they will ever make.

Overall, "Family Fundamentals" is an emotionally raw and deeply moving episode of POV. It tackles one of the most contentious issues of our time with sensitivity and care, and it does so in a way that makes it clear that this is not just a political issue, but a deeply personal one. Through its candid interviews and intimate footage, it provides viewers with a glimpse into the inner lives of families struggling with one of the most fundamental questions of our time – and it does so with grace, compassion, and empathy.
