POV Season 19 Episode 1 No More Tears Sister

  • June 27, 2006

In POV Season 19 Episode 1, "No More Tears Sister," viewers are introduced to the life and work of Sri Lankan human rights activist Dr. Rajani Thiranagama. The documentary follows her journey from a young, idealistic student in the 1970s to her tragic death at the hands of suspected Tamil Tigers in 1989.

Born into a conservative, middle-class Tamil family, Rajani was raised to believe in the importance of education and family values. But as she grew older, she became increasingly disillusioned with the political and social climate of her country. Fueled by her desire for justice and equality, she joined the Marxist-Leninist JVP (Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna) as a student and later became a founding member of the Tamil militant group, TELO (Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization).

But as the Sri Lankan civil war escalated, Rajani became increasingly disillusioned with the violent tactics of both the government and Tamil Tigers. She left TELO and began working as a human rights activist, documenting the atrocities committed by both sides in the conflict. Her outspoken criticism of the Tamil Tigers and her efforts to promote inter-ethnic unity made her a target for assassination, and she was killed while walking home from work one day.

The documentary is narrated by Rajani's sister, Nirmala, who shares both her own memories of Rajani and footage from Rajani's own home videos. Through these personal glimpses into Rajani's life, viewers get a sense of the complex, talented, and passionate woman that she was. The documentary also features interviews with other activists, scholars, and family members who provide insights into Rajani's work and legacy.

"No More Tears Sister" is a powerful, thought-provoking documentary that sheds light on the plight of Sri Lanka's Tamil community and the sacrifices of those who fought for their rights. It also speaks to the broader themes of human rights, social justice, and the importance of staying true to one's values in the face of adversity.
