Ep 15. Racing Dreams

  • February 23, 2012

Racing Dreams is the 24th season, 15th episode of the acclaimed documentary series POV. The episode takes us into the world of young go-kart racers who dream of making it big in professional NASCAR racing.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Marshall Curry, Racing Dreams is a poignant and insightful exploration of the hopes and aspirations of three young racers - Annabeth Barnes, Josh Hobson and Brandon Warren - as they compete in the World Karting Association's national championship series.

At the center of the episode is Annabeth, a charismatic and determined 11-year-old from rural North Carolina who is the youngest and only female driver in the fiercely competitive WKA series. Annabeth is not only racing against the boys, but also against the odds, as her family struggles to keep up with the costs of racing and the demands of a grueling schedule.

Josh, a 12-year-old from rural Ohio, is the reigning WKA champion and is determined to defend his title. He is confident and focused, but also feels the pressure to succeed, as his family has invested everything in his racing career.

Brandon, a 13-year-old from suburban Virginia, is the son of a former NASCAR driver and has grown up around racing. He is talented and driven, but also struggles with the pressure of living up to his father's legacy.

Through intimate interviews with the young racers, their families and their coaches, Racing Dreams offers a rare glimpse into the emotional and physical demands of a sport that requires more than just driving skills. The episode shows the dedication, sacrifice and hard work it takes to pursue a dream, as well as the toll it can take on young athletes and their families.

We see the young racers as they prepare for the races - practicing on the track, testing their karts and talking to their coaches. We also see the behind-the-scenes drama - the tensions between parents and coaches, the disappointments of losing a race, the elation of winning and the fear of injury.

Racing Dreams is not just a story about racing, but also about coming of age and finding one's place in the world. We see the young racers as they navigate the ups and downs of adolescence, dealing with peer pressure, romantic crushes and self-doubt.

The episode shows how racing provides a sense of purpose and identity for young athletes who may struggle to fit in elsewhere. We see how the racers and their families form a tight-knit community, supporting each other through victories and defeats.

Overall, Racing Dreams is a compelling and moving portrait of young people chasing their dreams, and the families, coaches and communities who support them along the way. It is a celebration of the human spirit and the resilience of youth, as well as a critique of the high stakes and intense pressure that can come with pursuing a career in professional sports.
