Punkin Chunkin, or Pumkin Chunking appropriately, is an annual event where spectators and amateur engineers gather for a three day weekend to chuck the pumpkins of the autumn season as far as they can with original, hand-built launching machines. Typically held during the first full weekend after Halloween in Bridgeville, Delaware, the World Championship Punkin Chunkin is celebrated and recognized worldwide. The Science Channel and Discovery Channel typically release coverage of the three day event.

Since 1986, seventy five plus teams from all across the country, and sometimes globe, have gathered in a small rural part of Delaware with various contraptions and machines to chunk pumpkins as far as they can with the hopes of making a new world record distance. The competition divisions for the methods of chunking pumpkins are fairly straightforward: Air Cannon, Centrifugal, Catapult, Torsion, Trebuchet, Human Powered, and Centrifugal Human Powered. There are even youth divisions, with Youth Air Cannon, Youth Catapult, Youth Trebuchet, Youth Human Powered, and Youth 10 and Under. Over the course of the three day event, teams are allowed one shot per day with a pumpkin of their choice, totaling three tries, with the furthest shot recorded for the competition. There are two titles teams can be aiming for: furthest distance for their category of machine and furthest distance overall. ATV riders use GPS coordinate systems to accurately catalogue and record all distances of launched pumpkins. A pumpkin that does not make it out of the machine to launch, or disintegrates into what spectators refer to as pumpkin pie does not count for the team. Pneumatic cannon ‘Big 10 Inch', a fan favorite of the festival and consistent title contender, currently hold the record for furthest distance, with a pumpkin chunk range of 5,545.43 feet.

More than twenty thousand spectators congregate every year to watch the pumpkins fly and to cheer on their favorite teams and division battles as team numbers and machines grow for chunkin pumpkins.
