In episode 2 of Reality Cupcakes season 1, titled "Thanks a Latte," the contestants are tasked with creating cupcakes that are inspired by their favorite coffee beverages. As soon as they enter the kitchen, they are met with a coffee bar with various syrups, coffee beans, and milk types displayed. The contestants must select their favorite coffee drink and create a cupcake that complements and showcases the flavors of the drink.
The clock starts ticking, and the contestants immediately get to work. Some choose simpler coffee drinks, while others pick more complex ones that challenge them to create unique flavors. The judges, consisting of a celebrity baker and a coffee expert, pay close attention to how well the contestants translate the coffee flavors into their cupcakes. They are looking for a balance of sweetness, acidity, and bitterness, as well as overall presentation.
As the contestants bake they run into several challenges - from forgetting ingredients to burning their cupcakes in the ovens. As ever, the judges keep a close watch on the contestants, both as they work and as they explain the flavors and inspirations behind their cupcakes.
In the judging round, the contestants present their creations to the judges. The first contestant introduces her rendition of the classic cappuccino with a vanilla cupcake and a frothy cream cheese frosting that has been heavily dusted with cocoa. The judges can't help but smile when one of them takes a sip of her actual cappuccino to compare the flavors.
The second cupcake is inspired by a trendy cold brew coffee drink. The contestant has infused the coffee flavors into the chocolate cupcake, added a zesty espresso frosting with a dash of lemon zest. One of the judges finds this cupcake particularly inspired as it brings the coffee to life in a completely different form.
The third cupcake is inspired by a spicy chai latte. The contestant has reinvented her cupcake by infusing warm cinnamon and nutmeg spices into her vanilla cupcake, topped with a fragrant frosting of spices and black tea. The judges cannot get enough of this spiced creation and nod their head in approval.
Lastly, the fourth contestant brings in a cupcake that is inspired by a unique coffee drink from Spain known as 'Cafe con Leche'. To bring this into a cupcake creation, the contestants whipped up a fluffy and silky mascarpone frosting with an intense black coffee flavor that floats perfectly on top of a chocolate cupcake. One judge explains how he can close his eyes and be transported to a sidewalk café in Madrid experiencing the flavors himself.
After much deliberation, the judges decide who has the best creation. The winner gets to pick up immunity from the next challenge. Meanwhile, the person with the weakest cupcake is sent home. With the competition heating up it's anyone's guess as to who will win Reality Cupcakes season 1.
