As the Redwall Abbey inhabitants settle in for a peaceful night's sleep, they are awoken by a group of unruly birds singing their hearts out. The sparrows have arrived, led by King Bull Sparra, who are looking for a new home. The bird king hopes to establish a kingdom at Redwall - a place that offers him safety and the ability to expand his reign.
Meanwhile, Matthias and Cornflower, the two young friends, are returning to the Abbey after gathering supplies when they stumble upon a group of migrant mice. One of the mice is injured, and they offer their help. The migrants, in turn, tell Matthias and Cornflower about King Bull Sparra's plan to take over Redwall. Matthias knows that Redwall is not equipped to fend off an army of birds with sharp talons and wings that can take them out of reach.
However, there's no turning back, and Matthias has to come up with a plan quickly. Matthias knows that the only way to defeat King Bull Sparra and his army is to take away his strategic advantage. The mouse warrior comes up with a daring plan to take away the Sparrow's kingdom, one piece at a time.
King Bull Sparra, meanwhile, consolidates his hold on the abbey. The sparrows are everywhere, from the roofs of the buildings to the trees and gardens. Sparrow sentries mount guard, watching over the Abbey day and night. They are even present in the Great Hall, where Redwall's leaders meet to work out their next move.
Through his cunning and resourcefulness, Matthias finds a way to push back against the Sparrow army. He discovers a way to get the Sparrows to leave Redwall entirely, but it will take courage, patience, and determination for Matthias to execute his plan.
The plan that Matthias puts in place produces results - the Sparrows are pushed out of Redwall - but there are casualties. However, it's a small price to pay for the long-term safety of Redwall and its inhabitants.
As Matthias and his friends relax, they are reminded of the old saying, "no good deed goes unpunished." They learn that King Bull Sparra is not someone to mess with, and his army vows to come back with a vengeance.
