A cartoon series produced for Nickelodeon and created by Arlene Klasky and Gabor Csupo, Rocket Power ran for three seasons and is in reruns on TeenNick. The show follows the daily lives of brother and sisters Otto and Reggie Rocket who live with their single father Ray in the beach side California city of Ocean Shores. Along with their friends the somewhat stupid Twister Rodriguez and the intelligent wet-blanket Sam Dullard, the Rocket siblings spend their time playing sports and having strange adventures as they struggle through adolescence. Though usually lighthearted, the cartoon sometimes covers serious or sad topics. The four friends have particular character traits and most of them have interests outside of athletics. Otto has a superior attitude when it comes to athletics and his main passion is sports, which he pursues to an almost obsessive level. Reggie is mature for her age and dabbles in publishing magazines. Tito is reckless in sports and pursues film making, often combining his two hobbies. Although sheltered Sam initially had no athletic abilities with the help of his friends he slowly becomes a better surfer and is willing to try other sports with them. Professional but failed surfer Ray and Tito run a surf shop and restaurant called the Shore Shack. The show focuses heavily on family dynamics and family's importance, using the medium of sports to illustrate it while encouraging the message that physical activity is necessary but also fun for children. Ultra competitive Otto often gets his sister and friends into trouble that they must get themselves out of, relying on each other and their families. The Rocket kids lost their mother Danielle when they were babies and have been raised by their father and, to a lesser extent, his best friend Tito. Reggie in particular sometimes suffers for the lack of a mother figure in her life, though the kids get a stepmother at the end of the series when Ray marries Tito's cousin. The quirky makeshift little family is generally happy and always willing to help each other out in difficult situations.
