Set in New York, Rubicon is a political thriller television series that revolves around an intelligence analyst named Will Travers. In the first episode, appropriately titled "Pilot - Gone in the Teeth," we are introduced to Will and the complex world he operates in.
As the episode begins, we see a man in a raincoat walking through a crowded city street, holding a briefcase. He eventually reaches his destination, a nondescript building. Once inside, he goes to the roof and jumps to his death. The man is discovered to be a high-ranking intelligence official, and his death raises suspicions of foul play.
We then meet Will Travers (played by James Badge Dale), a brilliant but socially awkward analyst working for the American Policy Institute (API), a secretive intelligence organization tasked with uncovering potential threats to national security. Will's involvement in the case begins when he is tasked by his boss, David Hadas (Peter Gerety), to investigate some strange patterns he has noticed in crossword puzzles from various newspapers. Will wraps the case in a few hours and gets back to his team, who, unlike Will, are talking about preparations for their Fourth of July weekend, and they leave before Will.
However, Will's findings pique the interest of his mentor, Tanya (Dallas Roberts), and a fellow analyst, Miles (Christopher Evan Welch). Together, the trio dives deeper into the mystery surrounding the dead man, discovering more clues about his past. Tanya and Miles are hesitant to involve themselves further, but Will is intrigued and can't help but keep digging.
Meanwhile, we are introduced to Katherine Rhumor (Miranda Richardson), a billionaire who runs defense contractor Atlas MacDowell. She is aware of the deceased official's work with an API program called "Rubicon," which is designed to identify terrorist threats through complex pattern recognition. Katherine becomes more and more suspicious of the official's death and hires a private investigator to look into it. The investigator starts asking around, including Will and his team, which only adds to the growing sense of intrigue surrounding the case.
As the episode progresses, Will becomes more deeply involved in the Rubicon program and the mysterious death of the intelligence official. He begins to uncover some troubling connections between the official, Atlas MacDowell, and possibly even the government itself. Will finds himself questioning what he thought he knew about his job and his country, as the stakes become higher and the danger more imminent.
The first episode of Rubicon is tense, fast-paced, and full of intrigue. The complex web of political and personal relationships, along with the shadowy world of intelligence analysis, makes for a thrilling ride. As Will and his team delve deeper into the case, the stakes are raised, and the viewer is left wondering who can be trusted and what will happen next. Overall, the first episode of Rubicon sets the stage for a thrilling, thought-provoking series that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
