Emma and James have recently moved into a 1930s semi-detached house with their two young children. They love the location but are struggling with the layout and lack of storage space. Sarah Beeny is called in to help them renovate their home instead of relocating to a bigger house.
Sarah begins by assessing their needs and wants, and comes up with a plan to maximize the space they already have. She suggests transforming their dining room into a playroom for the children, and opening up the kitchen to create a more functional living space. Sarah also recommends installing a utility room and adding extra storage solutions throughout the house.
The first step in the renovation process is to knock down a wall between the kitchen and dining room. Sarah brings in a structural engineer to ensure that the wall is not load-bearing, and then the builders get to work. After the wall is removed, the kitchen and dining room become a much larger open-plan area. A new kitchen is installed, featuring plenty of storage and modern appliances.
In the lounge, Sarah suggests building a bespoke storage unit to house all of the family’s belongings. The unit is made up of cupboards and shelves, with a section specifically for toys and games. This creates a more streamlined look in the room and frees up space for the family to relax in.
Next, Sarah turns her attention to the playroom conversion. She brings in a mural artist to create a fun jungle scene on one of the walls, which the children love. Sarah also installs a chalkboard wall so the kids can draw and play games. The playroom is completed with some comfy seating and plenty of storage for toys and books.
The final project is the utility room, which is currently a small bathroom. Sarah suggests moving the washing machine and dryer into this room and creating a separate entrance via the side of the house. The old bathroom is then converted into a stylish downstairs toilet and handbasin.
Throughout the renovation process, Sarah takes Emma and James shopping for new furniture and accessories. They choose some great pieces, including a new sofa, coffee table, and rug for the lounge. The finishing touches are added with new curtains, cushions, and wall art.
At the end of the renovation, Emma and James are thrilled with their transformed home. They have more space, better storage, and a more functional layout. Sarah has managed to create a family-friendly home that is both practical and stylish. Emma and James have decided to renovate instead of relocate, and they couldn't be happier with the result.
