- October 14, 2009
In Sasameki Koto season 1 episode 2, titled "Pretty People," we continue to follow the captivating story of Sumika Murasame and Ushio Kazama, two high school classmates who are secretly in love with each other. Sumika is struggling to come to terms with her feelings for Ushio, and is unsure whether or not Ushio feels the same way about her.
The episode opens with the girls discussing the upcoming school cultural festival. Sumika reveals that she and her best friend, Tomoe Hachisuka, will be performing a skit together. Ushio is surprised to hear this, as she never knew that Sumika had an interest in acting. As they continue to discuss the skit, Ushio casually mentions that she thinks Sumika would be good at playing the romantic lead, causing Sumika's heart to skip a beat.
Meanwhile, Tomoe has her own romantic woes to deal with. She has a crush on her classmate Miyako Taema, but is convinced that Miyako is only interested in Sumika. Tomoe asks for Sumika's advice on the matter, but before they can discuss it further, the school bell rings and they have to rush to class.
Later that day, Ushio and Sumika are walking home together when they run into a group of popular girls from their school. The girls greet Ushio and Sumika, and Ushio introduces Sumika as her best friend. However, one of the girls, a beautiful girl named Masaki Akemiya, seems to take an immediate interest in Sumika. Masaki comments on how pretty Sumika is, and asks her if she's ever considered modeling. Sumika brushes off the remark, but Ushio can't help but feel a twinge of jealousy.
As they continue walking, Ushio and Sumika stumble upon another group of girls from their school, including Miyako. Miyako is surprised to see Sumika and Ushio walking together, and Sumika introduces Miyako to Ushio. Miyako seems friendly enough, but Usho can't help but feel nervous around her.
The next day at school, Sumika and Tomoe prepare for their skit. Tomoe tells Sumika that she's decided to confess her feelings to Miyako, and asks Sumika to be her wingman. Sumika hesitates, as she's still struggling to come to terms with her own feelings for Ushio. However, she ultimately agrees to help Tomoe.
As they perform their skit, Sumika and Tomoe catch the attention of Masaki and her friends. Masaki seems particularly impressed with Sumika, and asks her if she'd be interested in modeling for her agency. Sumika is flattered, but once again brushes off the offer.
After the skit, Tomoe finally confesses her feelings to Miyako. Miyako is surprised, but tells Tomoe that she appreciates her honesty. However, Miyako makes it clear that she's not interested in dating anyone at the moment, leaving Tomoe heartbroken. Sumika tries to console her friend, but she can't help but feel guilty for not being able to reciprocate Ushio's feelings.
The episode ends with Ushio and Sumika walking home together once again. Ushio seems distracted, and Sumika can tell that something's bothering her. Ushio admits that she's jealous of Masaki's interest in Sumika, and tells Sumika that she wishes she were as pretty as her. Sumika is taken aback by this confession, and reassures Ushio that she thinks she's beautiful just the way she is. The two girls share a tender moment, but Sumika is still struggling with her own feelings for Ushio.
