In Argevollen season 1 episode 2, titled "Awakening," Tokimune Susumu, a young soldier of the Independent Unit 8, continues to struggle with operating the mecha suit called Argevollen. His commanding officer, Lieutenant Ukyo Samonji, gives him an ultimatum to either prove himself worthy of piloting the Argevollen or be transferred to another unit.
Meanwhile, a group of rogue soldiers from the rival nation of Ingelmia attacks a nearby town in search of a rare mineral called Couprinite. The Independent Unit 8 is deployed to defend the town, with Tokimune and the Argevollen leading the charge. During the battle, Tokimune's inexperience with piloting the Argevollen causes him to make mistakes, which jeopardizes the mission and endangers the lives of his teammates.
However, Tokimune's determination to prove himself and protect his comrades drives him to push the Argevollen beyond its limits. He discovers a hidden feature of the machine, which allows him to perform incredible feats of agility and speed. With this newfound power, Tokimune singlehandedly takes down several enemy mechas and turns the tide of the battle in favor of the Independent Unit 8.
The victory comes with a heavy price, though. One of the unit members, Jamie Hazaford, is critically injured in the crossfire. The episode ends with Tokimune reflecting on his performance and the consequences of his recklessness, as well as the realization that the Argevollen is not just a weapon but a tool that can be used for good or evil depending on who controls it.
Overall, "Awakening" is a thrilling episode that showcases the dangers and possibilities of mecha warfare, as well as the personal struggles of the characters involved. Tokimune's character development is especially noteworthy, as he goes from a naive young man to a skilled and responsible pilot. The action sequences are also well-executed, with fluid animations and intense sound effects. The episode sets up the rest of the season nicely, hinting at larger conflicts and conspiracies to come.
