Tiffany Cole and Michael Jackson seem to have it all figured out. But their hunger for money has led them down a path of greed and destruction. In episode 6 of season 2 of Snapped: Killer Couples, delve into the story of this duo and how they orchestrated one of the most heinous crimes in recent times.
Tiffany and Michael were a couple living in Florida, who met while working as coworkers at a restaurant. Both of them had their fair share of troubles growing up, but they seemed to have found solace in each other. They quickly became inseparable and moved in together. However, as they got closer, their insatiable desire for wealth started to become apparent.
In 2005, Tiffany concocted a plan to steal money from a wealthy couple. She convinced Michael and two other men, Alan Wade and Bruce Nixon, to help her in the heist. Tiffany was friends with Carol and Reggie Sumner, who were millionaires and were planning to sell their vacation home in Tennessee. She saw this as the perfect opportunity to get rich. She convinced the Sumners to take a trip with her and her friends to scout the potential property. While they were in the house, Tiffany used her skills as a con artist to gather enough information about the house's security system. She then called Michael and gave him a play-by-play of the Sumners' movements, so he could plan the perfect heist.
On July 15, 2005, Tiffany and her accomplices abducted the Sumners from their home in Jacksonville, Florida, and drove them to a house in Georgia. There, they tied them up and demanded access to their bank accounts. Carol and Reggie took almost 40 hours to cave into their torturers' demands. During this time, the perpetrators withdrew a staggering $100,000 from their accounts. The Sumners were then taken back to their home, where they were strangled and buried in a shallow grave in their backyard.
The police launched an investigation when the Sumners went missing, and it didn't take long for them to connect the dots to Tiffany and Michael. The other two men were also arrested, and all four of them were charged for the kidnapping, robbery, and murder of the Sumners.
What makes this case unique is that it was one of the first cases in which the death penalty was given for a woman in Florida. It took over a decade for the trial to reach its conclusion, and Tiffany was eventually given the death sentence. She was also given an additional life sentence without the possibility of parole on four other counts.
