Ep 8. Amy DeChant

  • April 10, 2005

Amy DeChant was proud of her small-town roots in rural Arkansas. The spunky 34-year-old was a beloved high school teacher and softball coach, adored by her students and respected by her colleagues. She was also a devoted mother of two, often volunteering at her children's school and church.

But behind her sunny demeanor and perfect facade, Amy harbored a dark secret. For years, she had been battling addiction to prescription painkillers, which she started taking after a shoulder injury. Her habit had escalated to the point where she was stealing pills from her own father, a doctor.

In February 2007, Amy's world came crashing down when her father discovered the theft and confronted her. In a fit of rage, Amy stabbed her father 17 times with a kitchen knife. She then called 911 and claimed that two intruders had attacked her father, but her lies quickly unraveled under police questioning.

As investigators dug deeper into Amy's life, they discovered a web of deceit and betrayal. Amy's marriage was falling apart, and she had been having an affair with a local business owner who had helped her procure the stolen pills. She had also been stealing money from her school's booster club to fuel her addiction.

The trial that followed gripped the small town of Hardy, Arkansas, as Amy's friends and colleagues struggled to come to terms with the shocking revelations. In the end, Amy was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
