Kristen Durgan seemed to have it all--a loving family, a successful career in the military, and a beautiful home in Florida. But on September 6, 2014, her world came crashing down when she was arrested for the murder of her husband, 33-year-old Justin Durgan.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities discovered that Kristen's marriage was not as perfect as it seemed. Justin had filed for divorce just days before his death, citing his wife's alcohol abuse and erratic behavior. Additionally, Kristen had been caught in a web of lies--telling friends and coworkers that she had cancer, claiming to have been sexually assaulted, and faking her own abduction.
Despite her claims of self-defense, prosecutors painted a different picture of Kristen--a woman obsessed with control and the idea of getting away with murder. They alleged that she had manipulated her husband into signing a postnuptial agreement that would entitle her to a large sum of money in the event of his death. And when Justin threatened to leave her, they said, Kristen became desperate to keep her lifestyle intact.
But as the trial began, Kristen's defense team argued that Justin had been abusive and controlling throughout their marriage, even going so far as to hold a gun to her head. They claimed that she was simply defending herself when she shot him in the back of the head.
As the jury deliberated, viewers were left to decide for themselves--was Kristen Durgan a victim of domestic violence, or a cold-blooded killer?
