[FLASHBACK]

Opening with a flashback to an event that took place before the story began, we see Emperor Qianlong accompanying Noble Lady Shu to take a tour of the palace. During their walk, Noble Lady Shu asks the emperor if he has a favorite among his concubines, to which he replies that he treats them all equally. However, she notices his gaze lingering on Consort Huan, who is playing the pipa in the courtyard.

Back in the present day, Wei Yingluo is still reeling from the shock of discovering that her biological mother is Empress Xiaoxian. Meanwhile, the Empress is dealing with her own problems, as she learns that her brother has been implicated in a plot to assassinate the emperor. She seeks out Noble Lady Shu for help, but when Noble Lady Shu visits the emperor to plead her brother's case, she is met with a cold response. The emperor informs her that he has already made up his mind and that her brother will be executed.

Wei Yingluo tries to comfort the Empress by reminding her that she still has the emperor's love and support, but the Empress is consumed with guilt over the fact that her family's actions have caused harm to others. She decides to take matters into her own hands and sneaks into the palace to see the emperor, hoping to plead her brother's case one more time.

While the Empress is away, Wei Yingluo takes the opportunity to investigate the origin of the mysterious letter she received in the previous episode. She discovers that the letter was written by a eunuch who used to work in the palace, and that he may have some information about the death of the former Emperor Yongzheng. With the help of a fellow servant, she sets out to find the eunuch and uncover the truth.

Meanwhile, Consort Huan is dealing with her own troubles as she struggles to cope with the loss of her son. She confides in her maid, Chun'er, who suggests that she write a letter to the emperor expressing her grief. Consort Huan takes her advice and writes a heartfelt letter, pouring out her emotions and asking for the emperor's help in finding the person responsible for her son's death.

As the episode comes to a close, we see Noble Lady Shu receiving a report that her brother has been executed. Devastated by the news, she goes to the emperor's palace and begs him to spare her brother's life, offering to do anything he asks in return. But the emperor tells her that it's too late, and that he has already made his decision.
