Arthur Przybyszewski owns a donut shop in a rundown Chicago neighborhood. He takes pride in his donuts and his Polish heritage, but his business has seen better days. Franco Wicks, a young African-American man, is his assistant and friend. Franco replaces Arthur's old neighborhood friend and troubled employee, James, who has gone missing. The two have a unique, and sometimes contentious, relationship, but they also indicate a deep affinity for one another.
In episode nine, titled Get It, Arthur, Arthur is a bit too trusting of some regular, albeit questionable, customers when he makes a substantial wager with them regarding the sold-out lottery. Franco has some trepidation about the bet, but Arthur's stubbornness is a guiding force. However, Franco's suggestions of calling for security are rebuffed, and things take a turn towards the worst when a donut shop robbery attempt occurs as the shop owner is seduced by the big jackpot fever.
There are also some fun side stories involving Tush, the building's owner, and his relationships with his family, particularly its octegenarian patriarch, and two local cops who are fans of the donut shop. Randy, an officer, has feelings for Franco, and they try to figure out if they should take the leap into a new relationship.
The episode touches on issues of trust, loyalty, and friendship. It was directed by Betsy Thomas and written by Gustavo Arellano and Jennifer Keene. The cast is highly skilled, including Jermaine Fowler as Franco and Judd Hirsch as Arthur, and the characters are given breathing space and occasionally flourishes of unexpected depth.
Superior Donuts blends humor with social commentary in a way that is both timely and palatable. The show depicts the joy and pain of people trying their best to come together to build a better community while navigating the complex and varying circumstances of individual lives. Get It, Arthur is a prime example of this excellent fusion.
