  • September 20, 2014

In season 4, episode 10 of Svengoolie, titled "The Black Cat" (1941), horror icon Bela Lugosi stars as Dr. Vitus Werdegast, a man who has just been released from a prison camp after being held captive for fifteen years during World War I. Werdegast travels to Hungary to meet up with an old acquaintance, Hjalmar Poelzig, who is now married to Werdegast's ex-wife and living in a sprawling mansion. However, Poelzig is not what he seems and Werdegast quickly discovers that his old friend is involved in unspeakable practices including cultish rituals and a love for the occult.

As the story unfolds, Werdegast becomes more and more drawn into Poelzig's spooky world. Meanwhile, a young couple on their honeymoon, Joan Alison and Peter Allison, coincidentally stop at Poelzig's mansion after a bus accident. Poelzig convinces the couple to stay with him as his guests, but Werdegast warns them of the danger they are in and urges them to leave the mansion.

The tension rises as Werdegast and Poelzig's uneasy alliance begins to unravel and Joan and Peter begin to unravel the secrets of the mansion on their own. As the mystery unfolds, Joan and Peter find themselves caught in the middle of a battle between the two men, with their own lives at stake.

As with many classic horror movies, "The Black Cat" incorporates themes of betrayal, revenge, and doomed love. Director Edgar G. Ulmer creates an unsettling atmosphere with eerie cinematography, including stylized shadows and swirling smoke that leave the audience feeling on edge.

Beloved horror icon Bela Lugosi is at his best in "The Black Cat," playing a complex and tormented character. His performance as Dr. Werdegast is nuanced and layered, giving the audience a glimpse into the mind and soul of a man who has been through hell and back.

"The Black Cat" is not just a horror movie, but a masterfully crafted work of art that explores the darker side of human nature. Viewers will be left with much to ponder and discuss long after the end credits roll.
