- April 22, 2017
In this episode of Svengoolie, Season 6, Episode 30, titled "The Mad Ghoul," viewers are transported to the thrilling world of horror cinema. The Mad Ghoul is a classic 1943 horror film directed by James Hogan and stars horror icon George Zucco.
The story revolves around Dr. Alfred Morris (played by George Zucco), a revered scientist who has discovered a serum that can bring the dead back to life. Alf's research is failing to achieve the desired results, so he turns to his handsome young assistant, Ted Allison (David Bruce), for help.
As it turns out, Ted is in love with Morris's daughter, Isabel (Evelyn Ankers), but he's too shy to tell her. Instead, he silently pines for her, even as Isabel becomes engaged to a local playboy, Eric Iverson (Turhan Bey).
When Morris experimentally tries the serum on an executed criminal, the results are shocking. Not only does the serum bring the crook back to life, but it also turns him into a raving madman who needs human flesh to survive. In the hands of a lesser actor, the role of the Mad Ghoul might have been laughable. But as played by character actor J. Carrol Naish, he is genuinely terrifying.
Ted becomes involved in the serum experiments too, in an effort to win the heart of Isabel. But his noble intentions are quickly forgotten when he becomes infected with the serum himself, devolving into the same feral, flesh-craving creature as the Mad Ghoul.
As the situation spirals out of control, we're treated to an array of thrilling and suspenseful moments, as Dr. Morris struggles to contain his creations before they bring the entire town to ruin.
