In this episode of Teen Titans Go!, entitled "50% Chad," our favorite superhero team finds themselves dealing with one of the most challenging foes they've ever faced - themselves! Robin, Cyborg, Beast Boy, Raven, and Starfire are all cloned until their duplicates are imposed onto their normal lives.
Things start off particularly chaotic with the duplication process itself, which - as can be expected from Teen Titans - goes awry and leaves each hero with a slightly altered version of themselves. Robin's clone is 50% Chad, an oddball representation of his leader. Raven has a peaceful, housewifely doppelganger who's very zen, which is a far cry from the usual Raven. Beast Boy's clone has a crush on Raven, clearly putting him at odds with the original. Cyborg's clone, meanwhile, is flat-out evil and hits on women constantly, while Starfire's clone is so meek and timid that she can barely speak up for herself.
As you might imagine, things get pretty wild as these new Titans try to fit into their respective lives. Robin's clone 50% Chad is particularly amusing, as he's a mashup of everything cute and ridiculous about Robin mixed with a surfer bro personality. Robin's already-pronounced love for stretching and working out is turned up to 11 by 50% Chad, who also becomes smitten with Starfire. By the same token, Cyborg's clone Villain appears less cartoonishly evil and more like he's from a different plane of existence. He demands food from everyone he sees, even if they're just puppets!
The humor in this episode is as expected gloriously silly. Beast Boy's clone's instant crush on Raven is something that the audience might predict but is no less humorous when it actually happens. Likewise, Raven's double is oddly the most hilarious and genuinely interesting to watch. Her wholesome presence takes a typical episode stereotype and gives it a brand new twist.
One of the key elements of the episode's plot is the difficulty that comes with trying to change things back. Robin accidentally destroys one of the cloning machines, which puts the Titans in a major bind. It'll take their collective strength to work together and find a way to fix their lives.
As with any episode of Teen Titans Go!, the animation is bright, vivid, and packed full of flair. The many different versions of the Titans are each distinct in design and movement, and their individual personalities are well-established from the start. The episode also includes a good deal of callbacks to previous happenings in the show, which will be enjoyable for those who are familiar with the Teen Titans Go! universe. Overall, "50% Chad" stands out as one of the funniest episodes the show has produced to date.
The audience will get a slice of escapism in this episode. The Teen Titans Go! team pulls in the sort of free-wheeling, madcap humor that's well-suited to their brand while still keeping things relatable. For anyone looking for a fun escape from everyday life, "50% Chad" is an episode that fits the bill perfectly.
