The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a British television series based on the famous detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The fourth season episode 2 is titled "The Dying Detective", and features Sherlock Holmes falling ill and seemingly dying.

The episode begins with Doctor Watson receiving a message from Mrs. Hudson, Sherlock Holmes' landlady, stating that Holmes is seriously ill and asking Watson to come right away. When Watson arrives, he finds Holmes bedridden and delirious, with no explanation for his illness. Mrs. Hudson claims that the only person who has been in contact with Holmes recently is Culverton Smith, a wealthy man who Holmes has had previous suspicions about.

Watson enlists the help of Inspector Morton to investigate Smith, but he claims to have no involvement in Holmes' illness. Smith is a peculiar character, with an interest in deadly tropical diseases and a collection of deadly insects. As Watson continues to investigate, he begins to suspect that Smith may have been responsible for Holmes' illness after all.

Meanwhile, Holmes' condition continues to deteriorate, and he becomes increasingly delirious. He refuses to see a doctor and insists that Watson leave him alone with Smith. When Watson returns the next day, he finds Holmes seemingly dead. The episode takes a shocking turn when it is revealed that Holmes was not really ill at all, but was pretending to be in order to catch Smith in a confession of attempted murder.

The episode is filled with suspense and intrigue, as viewers are left guessing as to whether Holmes is truly ill or if there is something more sinister at play. Actor Jeremy Brett delivers a standout performance as Sherlock Holmes, bringing depth and complexity to the character. The episode is a compelling mystery with a surprising twist ending that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
