Sarah left him for her younger sister, who had been having an affair with him. Jim was arrested and sent to the penal colony in Tasmania for killing a man.

The mystery deepens when Jim writes a letter to Sarah from Tasmania, mentioning that he knows what happened to the missing victim. It becomes clear to Holmes and Watson that Jim may have played a role in the crime.

As they continue to investigate, they discover that the victim was an old flame of Sarah's who had been visiting her. They also find a love letter from the victim to Sarah in the cardboard box, which raises suspicions.

Holmes and Watson finally piece together the events leading up to the murder. Jim had returned to England and discovered that Sarah's former lover had been visiting her. In a fit of jealous rage, he murdered the man and sent the ears to Sarah as a warning.

The episode ends with Jim being arrested and Holmes reflecting on the dark and twisted nature of human relationships. "The Cardboard Box" is a classic example of a Sherlock Holmes mystery, with its intricate plot, unexpected twists, and brilliant deduction. It is a must-see for fans of the genre and anyone who loves a good mystery.
