The Great British Bake Off Season 5 Episode 6 European Cakes

The Great British Bake Off continues into its fifth season and in this episode, the bakers are put to the test as they tackle traditional cakes from across Europe, from Germany's Black Forest gateau to Sweden's Princess cake.

As the signature challenge, the bakers must create a yeast-leavened cake known as a baba au rhum. The bakers must ensure their babas are evenly baked and have a strong rum flavor, as well as being perfectly soaked in a syrup of their own choosing.

For the technical challenge, the bakers are asked to make 12 slices of Prinsesstarta, also known as a Princess cake. This tricky challenge involves creating a light sponge that is then layered with raspberry jam, creme patissiere, and cream, before being covered in green marzipan and finished with a pink marzipan rose.

Finally, the showstopper challenge sees the bakers create a multi-layered entremet, a French dessert comprising of layers of sponge, mousse, and jelly. The bakers must create a visually stunning dessert that showcases their baking and decorating prowess as well as balancing flavors and textures.

Throughout the episode, the bakers face not only the usual challenges of baking but also the high-pressure situation of competing on national television. The judges scrutinize every element of the bakers' creations, from the taste and texture to the visual presentation.

As the competition heats up, tensions run high amongst the bakers, with some struggling to keep their cool whilst others thrive under the pressure. The judges, Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, offer their expert opinion and guidance, while presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins lighten the mood with their signature humor and wit.

In the end, only one baker will emerge victorious, securing their place in the competition and taking one step closer to being crowned Britain's best amateur baker.
