The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation Season 2 Episode 20 Smartphone Fish Finder
- April 16, 2016
In this episode of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation, viewers are introduced to a unique device that transforms a smartphone into a fish finder. Host Mo Rocca meets with the inventor, Nello, who explains how he came up with the idea for the device. Nello was frustrated with the limited functionality of traditional fish finders and wanted to create something that was both more affordable and easier to use.
The smartphone fish finder works by sending sonar signals from a small device that is attached to the fishing line. These signals bounce off of the underwater structure and fish, and then return to the device, where they are interpreted and displayed on the smartphone screen. The result is a detailed map of the underwater world that allows fishermen to better plan their approach and increase their chances of catching fish.
Mo Rocca takes the device out on the water for a test run with a professional fisherman to see how it performs in real world conditions. They first attach the device to the fishing line and toss it into the water. As they slowly reel it back in, they watch in amazement as the smartphone screen updates in real time with images of the underwater terrain and an array of fish that they never would have known were there otherwise.
Next, Mo meets with a team of entrepreneurs who have created a company that uses 3D printing technology to produce custom-fit bras. The team explains how traditional bras are often uncomfortable and ill-fitting, and how their 3D-printed bras solve these problems by molding to the unique shape of each individual's body. Mo gets a first-hand look at the bra-making process and sees how the team uses a special scanner to capture precise measurements of their customers' bodies, which they then use to create the perfect bra.
Later in the episode, Mo visits a lab where a team of scientists is working to create a new type of fuel from algae. The scientists explain how algae has the potential to be a highly efficient and sustainable source of biofuel, and Mo gets a chance to see some of the algae samples they are working with under a microscope.
Finally, Mo meets with a young inventor named Marissa, who has created a device that can help people with disabilities to better control their electronic devices. Marissa was inspired to create the device after watching her mother, who has multiple sclerosis, struggle to use her phone and other devices due to her limited mobility. The device Marissa created attaches to a person's finger and allows them to control their devices using a series of small movements and gestures.
The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation Season 2 Episode 20 is a fascinating look at some of the latest and most innovative ideas and inventions from around the world.
