The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation Season 7 Episode 24 Kelp Burgers

  • July 17, 2021

In this episode of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation, host Mo Rocca explores the world of sustainable food and how entrepreneurs are finding innovative ways to feed the planet. Rocca starts off by taking a trip to a farm in Maine, where a company called Ocean Approved is growing a unique crop: kelp. Kelp is a type of seaweed that is high in nutrients and can be used as an ingredient in many different types of food. Ocean Approved has found a way to turn kelp into a tasty and nutritious burger, and Rocca gets to sample one for himself.

Next, Rocca goes to California to meet the founders of Beyond Meat, a company that is making burgers and other meat products entirely out of plant-based materials. Beyond Meat's burgers are so convincing that they have been marketed to carnivores as a healthier and more sustainable alternative to traditional beef. Rocca gets a behind-the-scenes tour of the Beyond Meat manufacturing process and learns how the company has been able to replicate the taste and texture of meat using plant-based proteins.

In addition to exploring the world of sustainable food, Rocca also takes a look at how technology is being used to improve healthcare. He meets with the founder of a company called Eko, which has developed a stethoscope that uses artificial intelligence to detect heart murmurs and other potential signs of heart disease. This device has the potential to drastically reduce the number of misdiagnosed heart conditions and save lives.

Finally, Rocca travels to Los Angeles to visit a company called CarbonCure, which has developed a way to use carbon dioxide to strengthen concrete. By adding a small amount of CO2 to the concrete mix, CarbonCure is able to reduce the amount of cement needed, which not only saves money but also reduces the carbon footprint of the construction industry.

Overall, this episode of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation showcases some of the most cutting-edge and innovative solutions to some of the world's biggest problems. From sustainable food to healthcare to construction, entrepreneurs are using technology to create a brighter and more sustainable future for everyone.
