The Negotiation is the 19th episode of the third season of the American television series The Office. The episode first aired on April 5, 2007, on NBC and was directed by Jeffrey Blitz and written by Brent Forrester.

The episode begins with Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch undergoing a hostage crisis training drill, which involves the employees practicing what they would do in case of a hostage situation. However, Michael takes the drill too seriously and tries to use it as an opportunity to take control and become the hero. Meanwhile, back at the office, Dwight gets a hold of a new toy; a long-range listening device which he uses to eavesdrop on his co-workers' conversations.

The main plot of the episode revolves around negotiations between Dunder Mifflin and Stamford employees. Stamford has recently been merged with the Scranton branch, and as a result, two employees, Karen (Rashida Jones) and Jim (John Krasinski), now work at the same office. At the beginning of the episode, Karen requests a pay raise from Ryan (B.J. Novak), the company's Vice President of Northeast Sales. Though Ryan initially agrees to the raise, he quickly retracts his offer, leaving Karen feeling undervalued and underappreciated.

Seeing an opportunity to prove himself as a great boss, Michael decides to step in and negotiate on Karen's behalf. In typical Michael Scott fashion, he is overconfident in his ability to negotiate and makes the situation worse, causing Karen to storm out of the meeting. Meanwhile, Dwight overhears Jim and Pam (Jenna Fischer) discussing their reluctance to tell Roy (David Denman) about their relationship, so he takes it upon himself to tell Roy for them.

As the episode progresses, the negotiations between Karen and Ryan get increasingly more heated, with Michael trying to insert himself at every turn. In an attempt to resolve the situation, Jim tries to negotiate with Michael to get him to back off, but things only get worse when Michael accidentally reveals that Jim has a crush on Pam. Karen becomes even more upset, thinking that Jim's affection for Pam is why he is not taking her negotiation seriously.

The climax of the episode revolves around Michael ultimately failing to negotiate on Karen's behalf and her leaving the office feeling underappreciated and undervalued. However, the episode ends on a hopeful note when Karen tells Jim that she respects him for standing up for Pam, which seems to soften her stance towards him.

Overall, The Negotiation is a classic episode of The Office, full of the show's trademark humor and cringe-worthy moments. It deals with themes of negotiation, office politics, and love triangles in a way that is both relatable and hilarious. Fans of the show will not be disappointed by this episode, which features some of the series' most iconic moments and lines.
