The Passion is a two-hour musical drama that premiered on FOX on March 20, 2008, just a few days before Easter Sunday. The show, while not a new story, provides a modern re-telling of the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The Passion takes place in New Orleans and follows the journey of Jesus (played by Jencarlos Canela), Mary (played by Trisha Yearwood), Peter (played by Chris Daughtry), Judas (played by Jencarlos Canela), Pontius Pilate (played by Seal), and other key biblical characters.

The show is narrated by Tyler Perry, who makes a few appearances throughout the show. The musical performances are all live and take place at various iconic locations in New Orleans such as the Superdome, Jackson Square, and Woldenberg Park. The performances are seamlessly integrated into the story, with characters breaking out into well-known songs such as "Unconditionally" by Katy Perry, "Burning Love" by Elvis Presley, "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys, and "With Arms Wide Open" by Creed, to name a few.

The show begins with a depiction of Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey as the crowds wave palm branches and sing "Love Can Move Mountains" by Celine Dion. Viewers then see a conflict between Jesus and Judas, as Judas is struggling with the decision to betray his friend for money. Meanwhile, Pontius Pilate is trying to keep the peace in Jerusalem as the Jewish leaders pressure him to crucify Jesus.

As the story progresses, viewers see the Last Supper, where Jesus tells his disciples that he will soon be betrayed and crucified. The famous scene of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples is also depicted. After the meal, Judas leads the soldiers to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, ultimately leading to Jesus' arrest.

The Passion then follows the trial of Jesus, including his sentencing to death by crucifixion. Throughout the show, the theme of forgiveness is prevalent as Jesus forgives those who betray and harm him. The show culminates in an emotional scene of Jesus' crucifixion, where the cast performs "When Love Takes Over" by David Guetta and Kelly Rowland as Jesus is raised on the cross.

Overall, The Passion is a modern retelling of the Easter story that features well-known musicians performing classic and contemporary songs. The show also incorporates elements of New Orleans culture, such as a parade of Mardi Gras-style floats, to make it a unique experience. While the show may not be for everyone, it is a powerful reminder of the message of forgiveness and sacrifice that are at the heart of the Easter holiday.
