The Stacey Dooley Investigates Collection Season 6 Episode 2 Ecstasy Wars
- April 14, 2015
In this episode of The Stacey Dooley Investigates Collection, season 6 episode 2 titled "Ecstasy Wars," Stacey travels to Holland to investigate the burgeoning ecstasy trade.
Initially, Stacey visits a lab where she's shown how MDMA – the pure form of ecstasy – is made, and meets the scientists creating new strains of the drug. They explain how ecstasy can have therapeutic benefits when used responsibly, but also warn of the potential dangers of contaminated or excessively strong ecstasy.
Stacey then heads to the Dutch city of Utrecht, where she meets with a group of young people who take ecstasy regularly. Despite the drug's illegality, Stacey finds that it's relatively easy to obtain, with many people selling it openly on the streets.
Next, Stacey meets with the families of two teenagers who died after taking ecstasy. She learns that the drug is often mixed with other substances – such as PMMA, a similar but much more toxic drug – and that dealers may not know or care what they're selling. Stacey visits one of the nightclubs where the teenagers took the ecstasy and speaks with the staff and security team to get their perspective on the problem.
Finally, Stacey travels to Amsterdam to explore the city's controversial policy of "drug checking," which involves testing pills for purity and informing users of the results. Proponents argue that this approach can reduce harm and prevent deaths, while opponents argue that it could encourage more drug use.
Throughout the episode, Stacey tries to untangle the complexities of the ecstasy trade and understand why so many young people continue to take such a risky drug. She speaks with drug users, dealers, scientists, and experts to gain different perspectives on a challenging issue, and ultimately seeks to shine a light on the tragedy of preventable deaths.
