VH1 has released another comedy series, The Unicorn, which follows the story of Wade, a widower, who is still grieving over the loss of his wife but is trying to move on. The first episode saw him finally dip his toes back in the dating pool, and in episode 2 Breaking Up is Hard to Do, we see the difficulties that come with trying to pursue a new relationship.

Wade has been enjoying his time with a new woman, Caroline, but he starts to panic when she asks him to meet her friends. His insecurities about being the newest member of her inner circle drive him to make some questionable decisions, including a hilarious but ill-advised attempt to win their approval. Meanwhile, Grace is struggling to fit in at her new high school, and Michelle is dealing with the aftermath of a bad breakup.

The episode is about the characters learning that breaking up is hard to do, no matter whether it's a romantic or platonic relationship. Wade’s fear of losing Caroline causes him to act out and seek validation from her friends, but it only makes the situation worse. Similarly, Grace is trying to find new friends but is struggling to let go of the ones she had before. Michelle is dealing with the harder aspects of a breakup, trying to navigate the feelings of hurt and betrayal that come with someone breaking up with you.

While The Unicorn is a comedy, and Breaking Up is Hard to Do has plenty of hilarious moments, it also tackles some serious issues. Wade is dealing with the death of his wife and the fear of being alone, something that many people can relate to. Grace is trying to find her footing in a new place, which can be daunting and scary. Michelle is dealing with the emotions that come with being dumped, something that anyone who has ever been in a relationship can understand.

The episode has a great balance of humor and heart, with each character getting a chance to shine. Wade’s attempts at impressing Caroline's friends are cringeworthy but hilarious, while Grace's struggles with fitting in at her new school are both relatable and heartbreaking. Michelle's storyline, while more serious than the others, is well-handled, showing the complexities of relationships and how they can end abruptly and painfully.

Overall, Breaking Up is Hard to Do is a strong second episode of The Unicorn. It continues to develop the characters and their relationships while also bringing up new challenges for them to overcome. The episode is full of laughs, heart, and relatable moments, making it a great addition to the show.
