As the fourth season of The Vampire Diaries heads towards its finale, the stakes continue to get higher for our favorite Mystic Falls residents. Episode 21, "She's Come Undone," brings with it a sense of foreboding as everyone prepares for the ultimate showdown between the forces of good and evil that's been building throughout the season.
One of the focal points of the episode is Elena, who's been struggling with her newfound vampirism all season long. As she becomes more and more powerful, she also becomes more reckless, and her friends worry that she'll eventually fall prey to the darkness within her. This fear is compounded by the fact that Elena has now formed a bond with the evil vampire/warlock hybrid Klaus, who seems to be exerting a disturbingly strong influence over her.
Meanwhile, the Salvatore brothers continue to be at odds over Elena and her fate. Stefan, who has always been more sympathetic to Elena's plight as a vampire, wants to help her overcome her inner demons and find a way to live a normal life. Damon, on the other hand, thinks that Elena's dark side is something that needs to be embraced and controlled, rather than suppressed.
As tensions rise, Mystic Falls sees the return of an old enemy: the vampire hunter Connor. He's been off the grid for a while, but now he's back with a vengeance and determined to take down as many vampires as possible. He's also uncovered a shocking secret that could change everything for Elena and her friends, and it's up to them to stop him before it's too late.
Meanwhile, Bonnie remains trapped in the land of the dead, struggling to find a way back to the land of the living. She's also come into contact with a mysterious new ally, who seems to have his own agenda. Will he be able to help Bonnie find her way back, or is he just another obstacle in her path?
With all of this going on, it's easy to forget that there's still a big, bad villain lurking in the shadows: Silas, the ancient immortal who's been causing trouble all season long. He's still out there, and he's still looking to get his hands on the cure for vampirism. But just who will end up with the cure, and what will they do with it?
As usual, The Vampire Diaries' penultimate episode of the season leaves us with more questions than answers. But one thing's for sure: the stakes have never been higher, and by the time the season finale rolls around, the lives of our favorite characters will never be the same.
