Following a particularly tense and brutal episode, Tokyo Ghoul’s sixth episode of the show’s second season entitled “Thousand Paths” opens on an emotional note. We see Hinami visiting the grave of her parents, leaving flowers at their headstone before walking home. Given the events of the previous episode, it’s not difficult to understand that Hinami is feeling lost and very much alone, grieving the loss not just of her parents but of her mentor, Kamishiro.

As Hinami wanders the dark streets, a group of doves spot her and the chase begins. Fortunately, Hinami manages to outrun the doves before finally finding sanctuary with her new friend, Banjo. Hinami is not the only one running for her life, with Yomo and Kaneki being chased down by a group of CCG agents led by Akira.

As the episode progresses, we see that a lot has shifted, with Kaneki taking on a much more forceful and aggressive role. His attempts to steer those around him toward self-preservation, however, are not always welcome; in one particularly heart-wrenching scene, Banjo, Hinami, and Kaneki are seen arguing about what the future holds, with Banjo ultimately raging against Kaneki’s insistence that they must fight to survive. For Kaneki, there is no other choice; with the Doves closing in and the very real possibility of being killed at any given moment, standing still is simply not an option.

Through the course of the episode, we continue to see the parallels between the two sides, with both the ghouls and the CCG facing issues around what it means to be human. In one scene, Juuzou comments to Hanbee that he feels as though the world is not black and white, and Hanbee agrees, stating that it is the grey areas where the real battles lie. Meanwhile, as Kaneki and company continue to try to escape the relentless attacks being waged against them, they encounter the infamous Yamori.

As the episode progresses, the focus shifts to Kaneki and Yamori, with the two of them facing off against one another. This is a particularly tense and heart-pumping scene, as Yamori’s brutal and sadistic nature is brought to the forefront. Fans looking for a bit of action and excitement in their anime will not be disappointed.

Towards the end of the episode, we see a new leader emerge amongst the CCG ranks. While we won’t give anything away, this shift in leadership represents a significant turning point in the show, as new ideas and ideals are introduced. With a new age dawning, it will be interesting to see how both the ghouls and the CCG adapt and move forward.

All in all, “Thousand Paths” is a strong episode, packed with action, emotional moments, and a sense of tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat. For fans of the series, this is yet another must-watch episode, full of the drama and intensity that Tokyo Ghoul has become known for. Whether you are already up to date with the series or simply have a passion for well-crafted anime, this episode is well worth your time.
