The award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play went to James Earl Jones for "The Great White Hope," while Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play went to Colleen Dewhurst for "All in One."

The show also featured touching tributes to theater legends who had passed away in the previous year, including Oscar Hammerstein II and Ethel Merman. A special Tony Award was also presented to Richard Rodgers for his contributions to the theater.
