Along the way, they come across a group of bandits attacking a young man named Allen Schezar. Despite Van's initial reluctance, he agrees to help Allen fight off the bandits.

As they battle the bandits, Hitomi has a vision of Allen falling in battle and warns him of the danger. After defeating the bandits, Allen reveals he is a swordsman and offers to teach Van how to fight properly. However, Van is hesitant to trust Allen and feels that he should rely on the power of his Escaflowne, the giant robot armor he pilots.

The group travels together to the neighboring country of Freid to attend the birthday celebration of Freid's king. At the celebration, Allen is accused of being a spy and is challenged to a duel by a knight named Dryden Fassa. Allen easily defeats Dryden and proves his loyalty to Freid.
