In season 7, episode 8 of What on Earth?, the team delves into the mysteries surrounding the lost labyrinth of Imhotep, an ancient Egyptian architect and engineer who lived over 4,000 years ago. Imhotep is credited with designing the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the first pyramid ever built, as well as several other architectural marvels during the Early Dynastic Period. However, the team believes that there may be much more to Imhotep's legacy than originally thought.
The episode begins with satellite footage of the Saqqara necropolis, the site of the Step Pyramid and Imhotep's supposed burial place. Surprisingly, the team discovers that there are actually several more pyramids and tombs buried beneath the surface of the desert. Using cutting-edge technology, they are able to create a 3D map of the area and locate what they believe to be the entrance to Imhotep's lost labyrinth.
The team sets out on foot to explore the site and encounters several obstacles along the way, including hidden sinkholes and deadly scorpions. Eventually, they discover a hidden chamber that contains clues to the labyrinth's layout. These clues suggest that the labyrinth may have been designed as a test of intelligence and problem-solving ability, with multiple paths and puzzles that must be solved in order to reach the center.
As they make their way deeper into the labyrinth, the team uncovers evidence of advanced engineering techniques that were far ahead of their time. The walls are lined with intricate carvings and paintings that provide insight into ancient Egyptian culture and religion. They also find evidence of hidden chambers and secret doors that suggest the labyrinth may have served a more sinister purpose.
At one point, the team comes across a series of wooden pegs that appear to be part of a mechanism for opening a hidden door. They are able to reconstruct the mechanism and open the door, revealing a hidden passage that leads them to an underground chamber filled with gold and other treasures. However, their excitement is short-lived when they discover that the chamber is also home to a deadly creature that they must avoid or face certain death.
