Preparing for the Big Release is the twelfth episode of season one of Wild Animal Orphans. The show follows the efforts of the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand to rescue, rehabilitate, and release orphaned and injured animals back into the wild.

In this episode, the team is preparing to release several animals back into their natural habitats. The first animal to be released is a young otter that had been rescued several months earlier. The team had nursed the otter back to health, teaching it how to swim and hunt for food in the process.

The team members are shown carefully packing the otter into a crate for the journey to the release site. Once they arrive, they carry the crate to the edge of a river where the otter is released into the water. The otter quickly disappears, swimming away confidently.

The team then turns their attention to a group of macaques that they have been caring for. These monkeys had been confiscated from a street performer who had been using them to earn money from tourists. Being kept in tight quarters and being used for human entertainment had taken a toll on these creatures. They needed to be taught how to climb trees and find food again.

Over several months, the team had worked with the macaques, teaching them how to behave like wild monkeys once again. In this episode, the team heads to the release site, a remote forested area, to release the macaques back into the wild. The macaques are visibly excited as they are released from their crates and scamper up the trees.

The show also highlights the work of the team in caring for an injured bird of prey. The bird had been trapped in a net, resulting in a broken wing. The team had to perform surgery to repair the wing and then nurse the bird back to health.

In this episode, the team members are seen teaching the bird how to fly again. They start by placing the bird in a small aviary where it can flap its wings without injuring itself further. Slowly but surely, the bird becomes stronger in its wing and is soon ready for release.

The team takes the bird to a clearing where it is released into the air. The bird circles around a few times, testing its wing, before flying off into the distance. The team members watch with satisfaction, knowing that they had given this bird a second chance at life.

The final segment of the show takes place at a beach where the team is releasing a young turtle back into the ocean. The turtle had been brought to the team after it had been injured by a fishing net.

The team members are seen carrying the turtle to the water's edge where they place it on the sand. The turtle quickly crawls into the water and swims away. The team members stay on the beach, watching the turtle as it disappears into the ocean.

Throughout the episode, the dedication and compassion of the team are highlighted. The work they do is vital to the survival of these animals, many of which would not survive without the aid of humans. The rewards of their work are evident in the release of these animals back into the wild where they belong.
