Wild Islands is a nature documentary series that takes the viewers on an exciting journey through the most stunning and remote wilderness areas of Ireland. The show was produced by the renowned environmentalist and filmmaker Eamon de Buitlear in 1998 and features breathtaking footage of the unspoiled landscapes, flora, and fauna of the Emerald Isle. The series comprises six episodes, each focusing on a particular island or group of islands, and explores their unique ecology, geology, history, and culture.

The first episode titled "Aran" takes us to the rugged islands off the west coast of County Galway, where we witness the harsh conditions and ancient lifestyle of the inhabitants, who still practice traditional crafts and fishing techniques. We also learn about the endangered bird species that inhabit the cliffs and lagoons, such as the puffins, guillemots, and shearwaters.

The second episode "Inishturk and Clare" features two islands, one off the Mayo coast and the other off the coast of County Donegal, and highlights the contrasts and similarities in their ecosystems. We see the spectacular sea stacks and caves of Inishturk, where seals and sea birds thrive, and the rugged beauty of Clare Island, where we encounter wild goats, red deer, and rare plants.

The third episode "Cape Clear and Sherkin" takes us to the southernmost inhabited islands of Ireland, where we discover the rich maritime and cultural heritage of these remote outposts. We explore the rocky shores and offshore islands that are home to gannets, razorbills, and dolphins, and learn about the Irish language and folklore that still flourish here.

The fourth episode "Skellig and Deenish" showcases the iconic Skellig Islands, which are UNESCO World Heritage sites and home to one of the world's most dangerous and spectacular bird colonies. We follow the steep climb to the top of Skellig Michael, the larger of the two islands, where we encounter the ancient monastic settlement and its resident puffins and storm petrels. We also visit the nearby Deenish Island and its charming lighthouse and wildlife sanctuary.

The fifth episode "Achill and Inishbiggle" takes us to the largest of the Irish islands, Achill, where we see the majestic cliffs, towering sea stacks, and sandy beaches that have inspired artists and writers for centuries. We also visit the neighboring Inishbiggle Island, which has a rich history of fishing, farming, and wildlife conservation.

The final episode "Rathlin and Inishmurray" concludes the series with two remote islands off the north and west coasts of Ireland. We witness the spectacular bird migrations and seal colonies of Rathlin Island and the ancient monastic ruins and endemic plants of Inishmurray. We also hear the poignant stories of the last islanders who were forced to leave their ancestral homes due to economic and social changes.

Throughout the series, Eamon de Buitlear provides insightful commentary and shares his passion and knowledge of the Irish natural environment. He also interviews local experts, historians, and residents who offer their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing the islands and their communities. The show is a visual feast for nature lovers and a reminder of the importance of preserving and respecting the fragile ecosystems and cultures of our planet's islands.
