Word Travels is a travel documentary series that follows Robin Esrock, a seasoned travel writer, and Julia Dimon, a young travel journalist, as they explore different countries and cultures around the world. In this episode, titled "Yukon: A Story Tough to Swallow," Robin and Julia embark on an epic adventure in Canada's remote Yukon Territory.

Their journey begins in Whitehorse, the capital city of the Yukon, known for its rich mining history and stunning natural beauty. After exploring the town and meeting some of the locals, Robin and Julia set out on a grueling hike through the wilderness, surrounded by rugged mountain ranges and pristine lakes. Along the way, they encounter various wildlife, including caribou, moose, and grizzly bears.

Their ultimate goal is to reach Dawson City, a historic gold rush town that still exudes the frontier spirit of the late 1800s. But getting there is no easy feat. First, they must navigate the treacherous Yukon River, which is renowned for its swift currents and unpredictable weather conditions. They join a group of intrepid adventurers on a rafting trip down the river, battling their way through rapids and whirlpools.

Once they reach the other side, they face another daunting challenge - the Sourtoe Cocktail. This bizarre tradition involves drinking a shot of whiskey that contains a real, preserved human toe. To complete the challenge, the toe must touch your lips. Robin and Julia are initially skeptical, but soon discover that the Sourtoe Cocktail has a rich backstory and has become a beloved cultural phenomenon in the Yukon.

As they approach Dawson City, Robin and Julia reflect on the harsh realities of life in the Yukon's early days. The gold rush brought thousands of prospectors to the region, but many of them met tragic ends due to disease, hunger, and violence. The town's museums and historic sites offer a vivid glimpse into this tumultuous era, and Robin and Julia marvel at the perseverance and resilience of those who came before them.

Despite its challenging terrain and harsh climate, the Yukon holds a special allure for travelers who crave adventure and a deeper connection to nature. "Yukon: A Story Tough to Swallow" offers a fascinating look at this rugged part of the world, and the people who call it home. Through Robin and Julia's eyes, we are transported to a place of breathtaking beauty and rich history, where every step is a new adventure.
