As a fan of video games and anime, Narumi Momose is the quintessential otaku. She works at a gaming company alongside her friend Hirotaka Nifuji, who is also an otaku. While the two share a strong bond, Hirotaka seems indifferent to the romantic feelings Narumi has for him. In an effort to move on, Narumi agrees to go out with her ex-boyfriend, Kou Sakuragi, who is also an otaku.
In episode 8, "Weakness is Thunder and Years of Insecurity," we see the aftermath of Narumi and Kou's date. While Narumi enjoyed herself, she can't help but feel guilty for not being over Hirotaka yet. At work, she tries to avoid him, but they end up having to work together on a project. Hirotaka is still unaware of Narumi's date and flirts with her, causing Narumi to feel even more conflicted.
Meanwhile, Kou is struggling with his job as a voice actor. He's been feeling insecure about his abilities and can't seem to get in the right mindset for his latest role. Narumi tries to comfort him, but his insecurity only frustrates her. She confides in Hanako, her friend and fellow otaku, who advises her to be honest with Kou about her feelings for Hirotaka.
As the work project nears completion, Hirotaka asks Narumi out for drinks. She agrees, hoping to find a way to confess her feelings to him. However, things take a turn when they run into Kou at the bar. Kou, who is already drunk, lashes out at Hirotaka, accusing him of leading Narumi on. Hirotaka, confused, reveals that he has a girlfriend, much to Narumi's shock.
In this episode, we see the characters' vulnerabilities and insecurities on full display. Narumi, struggling with her unrequited feelings for Hirotaka, tries to move on but is unable to. Kou, insecure about his voice acting skills, takes out his frustrations on Narumi and Hirotaka. And Hirotaka, who has always seemed indifferent to romantic relationships, surprises everyone with the reveal of his girlfriend.
"Weakness is Thunder and Years of Insecurity" continues to explore the complexities of relationships, both romantic and platonic. It's a reminder that even the most confident of people can be riddled with insecurities, and that communication is key in any relationship.
